Introduction

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) introduced the On-Demand Examination (ODE) system for Secondary Level students in 2003. This system provides flexibility in exam scheduling, allowing students to appear for exams based on their readiness rather than a fixed schedule. NIOS reintroduced ODES in 2005, and following its success, extended it to the Senior Secondary level in 2007. ODES is currently conducted at NIOS Headquarters in NOIDA and select Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) centers for various subjects at both levels.

Available Subjects

Secondary Level:
Subjects include Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science & Technology, Social Science, Economics, Business Studies, Home Science, Psychology, Indian Culture & Heritage, Painting, Data Entry Operations, Accountancy, and others.

Senior Secondary Level:
Subjects include Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Political Science, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy, Sociology, Psychology, Environmental Science, Mass Communication, and more.

Medium of Question Paper:
The question papers are available in both English and Hindi. However, students from regional mediums can write answers in their respective regional languages.

Features of ODES

  • A unique question paper is generated randomly by a computer from an extensive question bank.
  • Each question paper is based on a blueprint and contains questions with the same difficulty level, covering various learning objectives like knowledge, understanding, application, and skills.

Advantages of ODES

  • Students can appear for exams when they are ready, reducing stress and anxiety associated with fixed exam schedules.
  • The system minimizes the threat of failure and frustration.
  • Immediate knowledge of results provides motivation for further progress.
  • Students can reappear for exams as many times as needed until they are satisfied with their performance.
  • The system reduces malpractice since each student receives a unique question paper.

Result & Certification

  • ODES results are published on the NIOS website (www.nios.ac.in) at the end of each month for exams conducted during the previous month.
  • Mark sheets and other documents will be issued only to students who have passed all subjects. Those seeking individual mark sheets can apply online through the NIOS e-service.
  • For re-checking or re-evaluation, students can apply to the Director (Evaluation) following the standard procedure, with the necessary fees.

Examination Schedule and Practical Exams

  • Theory Exams: Conducted at KVS centers and NIOS HQ in NOIDA from Tuesday to Thursday, and sometimes on Fridays.
  • Practical Exams: Held weekly, typically on Fridays and Saturdays, at designated study centers or reputed schools.
  • Result Declaration: Every month via the NIOS website.
